Night of Giving
I can clearly remember the headache of wondering if our paycheck could stretch as far as the bills. It was nagging and constant. How were we going to pay for my school loan, hospital bills from our new baby and the other expenses of life? The generalized uncertainty was the undercurrent of daily living for me. That feeling has tormented many of our friends and neighbors around the town. But last night, with the help of Tabitha’s Way and the donations of generous friends, Wilde Real Estate and other partners were able to ease some of the worries of 225 families across Utah County.
Volunteers came and shared some refreshment before heading out into 25 degree weather to deliver a box full of turkey, potatoes, canned goods and cake. Then off to the family car, and down the busy streets to deliver food like busy, jolly Santa himself.
Some thoughts about the night’s deliveries, “The mom was very grateful and the kids were excited” and the “families receiving were grateful, humble and kind.”
“It opened the door to talk about service” with our kids and on one of the deliveries, “a little grandma hugged my son and it was adorable. Almost all of the families invited us in and asked what they could offer us.”
My daughter told me on her deliveries, the first house looked like any house – even like ours! Need does not take any certain shape and my mind swelled with the memory when it once was our house.
For me, yesterday was a true night of giving back to the many people who helped me during my own struggles.
Overall 225 families received a hearty Christmas dinner but many more received an unforgettable feeling of connection and love.
Thank you for making this a special night!
A last word from the senior center where we were gathered: “Dear Santa, I already have everything I need for this year. Got my family, good friends and love. Please take care of those who need you. THANK YOU!”
